Overview of Grand Canyon of Aoukerda

Program: 3h30 walk/+150m/-0m (1h30min by car), Departure from Igmir

Nestled in the heart of the Anti-Atlas region of southern Morocco, lies a popular Morocco destination for travelers: the grand canyon of Aoukerda. Hiking along the dry wadi (river) through the gorge, visitors will soon find themselves enclosed between towering mountains several hundred meters high, as the canyon dramatically narrows. The groves of palm trees, scattered throughout the bottom of the canyon, add to the beauty of the hike. Adrar Ecotours invites you to walk quietly amidst the palm trees and bushes of white and pink laurels that grow along the wadi bed. Take the small staircase to the entrance of Ifri N’Tfkirt (Old Lady’s Tunnel), a twenty-meter passage carved into the cliff by local villagers. The tunnel was ingeniously designed to direct the river to continue following the same canyon, rather than switching to another path.

The hike culminates with a spectacular view from the belvedere, overlooking a landscape view of the lower canyon.
